چکیده

www.frontiersinecology.org © The Ecological Society of America E problems are intensifying and threatening biodiversity and sustainability worldwide. Scientific understanding is a necessary step toward addressing these problems, but natural science alone is insufficient for achieving desired outcomes that benefit humans and the environment. Human behavior strongly influences ecological and social outcomes; individual decisions and institutional systems affect how environmental problems are addressed. These social–ecological outcomes can relate to monetary (eg economic growth, human health) or non-monetary (eg human well-being, improved water quality) values. Social–ecological frameworks represent a promising approach for addressing the human dimension of environmental problems. Specifically, a social–ecological framework is a conceptual model used to examine complex interactions between people and ecological entities and processes. Social– ecological frameworks identify how social factors influence biodiversity, community structure, and ecosystem processes, as well as how ecological change affects social systems through ecosystem services (Figure 1). There is growing appreciation that the integration of social and natural sciences is essential for understanding environmental issues and managing ecosystem services (Grimm et al. 2000; Collins et al. 2011). To date, this approach has focused almost exclusively on macro-organisms (plants and animals). We argue that a social–ecological framework is also critical for managing microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, archaea, and viruses.

Putting the "E" in SES: unpacking the ecology in the Ostrom social-ecological system framework

The Ostrom social-ecological system (SES) framework offers an interdisciplinary tool for studies of linked human-natural systems. However, its origin in the social sciences belies the effectiveness of its interdisciplinary ambitions and undermines its ability to cope with ecological complexity. To narrow the gap between inherently dynamic ecological systems and the SES framework, we need to exp...

Evaluation of Ecological Vulnerability in Chelgard Mountainous Landscape

Although complexity and vulnerability assessment of mountain landscapes is increasingly taken into consideration, less attention is paid to ecophronesis-based solutions so as to reduce the fragile ecosystem vulnerability. The main propose of this study is to provide an insight of mountain complex landscape vulnerability and propose ecophronesis-based solutions in strategic planning framework fo...

Linking functional diversity and social actor strategies in a framework for interdisciplinary analysis of nature's benefits to society.

The crucial role of biodiversity in the links between ecosystems and societies has been repeatedly highlighted both as source of wellbeing and as a target of human actions, but not all aspects of biodiversity are equally important to different ecosystem services. Similarly, different social actors have different perceptions of and access to ecosystem services, and therefore, they have different...

Social-ecological outcomes in recreational fisheries: the interaction of lakeshore development and stocking.

Many ecosystems continue to experience rapid transformations due to processes like land use change and resource extraction. A systems approach to maintaining natural resources focuses on how interactions and feedbacks among components of complex social-ecological systems generate social and ecological outcomes. In recreational fisheries, residential shoreline development and fish stocking are t...

The Relationship between General Health of Citizens in Pardisa District of Qom and their Satisfaction with Ecological Components of Urban Quality of Life

Introduction: Human ecology examines the interactions between humans and the environment. Investigation of the human happiness and health requires a systematic study of the human life and ecosystem, which includes the physical and social environment of the human species.  Ecosystem is the basis of changes that occur in the biological, psychological, and social systems, because they happen in...
